Striking the Han
The han is one of the ways the sitting schedule at monasteries and Zen centers is marked. The rhythmic rap of the wooden han at the Bodhi Manda Zen Center announces the beginning of the day during zazen in the Zendo and the beginning of dusk at the end of the day. Click below to listen to a recording made by Michael Hughes of the Bodhi’s han announcing the start of zazen.
